A tiger was caught in a storm. He had wandered near the village, looking for something to eat. On the outskirts of that village lived an ill-tempered old woman. The tiger huddled in a shelter close to the wall of the woman’s hut.

একটি বাঘ ঝড়ে আটকে গিয়েছিলো। সে গ্রামে খাবারের জন্য ঘোরাঘুরি করতে লাগল। গ্রামের শেষ প্রান্তে এক খিটখিটে বৃদ্ধা বাস করত। বৃদ্ধার কুঁড়েঘরের দেয়ালের কাছে বাঘটি গুটিশুটি মেরে আশ্রয় নিলো।

The old woman was feeling very ill-tempered that night. The rainwater was leaking through the roof.

সে রাত্রে বৃদ্ধার মেজাজ খুবই খারাপ ছিল। তার ছাদ দিয়ে জল পড়ছিলো।

“There is no escape from this drip-drip, she muttered angrily, pushing her bed around the room to keep it dry. She shoved the bed and a tin trunk against a wall. The well shook.

Meanwhile, Bholenath, the potter, was out in the night, looking for his donkey in the storm. Suddenly he saw an animal huddled in the dark against the wall of the woman’s hut.

ইতিমধ্যে, কুমোর ভোলানাথ ঝড়ের রাতে তার গাধা খুঁজতে বেরিয়েছে। হটাৎ সে দেখলো একটা জন্তু বুড়ির দেওয়াল ঘেসে গুটিশুটি মেরে বসে আছে।

ওই তো আমার গাধাটা! ভোলেনাথ চেঁচিয়ে উঠলো এবং বাঘটার দিকে ছুটে গিয়ে তাকে আকড়ে ধরলো। সে বাঘটার কান ধরে টান দিলো।

“Move, you lazy donkey, or I will give you a hard time!”

“চল কুঁড়ে গাধা, নাহলে তোর কপালে অনেক দুঃখ আছে। “

বাঘটি সত্যি খুব ভয় পেলো। “এটাই নিশ্চয় সেই ভয়ানক ড্রিপ ড্রিপ !” সে ভাবলো।

Bholenath dragged the tiger home and kept him tied by a sturdy rope to a tree near his hut.

ভোলানাথ বাঘটাকে টানতে টানতে বাড়িতে নিয়ে গেলো এবং একটি মজবুত দড়ি দিয়ে তার কুরে ঘরের কাছে একটা গাছের সাথে বেঁধে রাখলো।

In the morning, Bholenath’s wife discovered the tiger tied to the tree and screamed in fear. Hearing her, the neighbors came running out of their huts. Bholenath was sleeping. He came out, too.

সকালবেলা, ভোলানাথ এর বউ দেখলো যে গাছের সাথে দড়ি দিয়ে বাধা একটা বাঘ আর ভয়ে সে চিৎকার উঠল। তার চিৎকার শুনে প্রতিবেশীরা তাদের ঘর থেকে দৌড়ে এল। ভোলানাথ ঘুমোচ্ছিলো। সেও বেরিয়ে এলো।

The people were all mystified. “Who tied this tiger to the tree?” They asked.

সব লোকজন হতবাক হয়ে গেলো। কে বাঘটাকে গাছের সাথে বাঁধল? তারা জিজ্ঞাসা করলো।

A neighbor said, “I think Bholenath can tell us.! saw him last night dragging an animal through the storm.”

একজন প্রতিবেশী বলল,”আমার মনে হয় ভোলানাথ বলতে পারবে। আমি কাল রাতে ওকে একটা জন্তু ঝড়জলের মধ্যে টেনে আনতে দেখেছি।”

Bholenath was too frightened to admit his mistake. Everyone looked questioningly at Bholenath. In the meantime, the tiger, disturbed and confused by all the people, had chewed through the rope. It ran away to the jungle. The villagers were relieved.

ভোলানাথ ভয়ে তার ভুল মেনে নিতে পারলো না। সবাই ভোলানাতের দিকে জিজ্ঞাসা দৃষ্টিতে তাক্কাল ইতিমধ্যে মানুষের ভিড় বিরক্ত আর হতভম্ব বাঘটি দড়িটি চিবিয়ে ফেলেছে।সে জঙ্গলের দিকে দৌড় লাগল। গ্রামবাসীরা হাফ ছেড়ে বাঁচলো।

Bholenath now saw an opportunity to brag.

এবার ভোলানাথ নিজের নাম করার সুযোগ পেলো।

“It is I who captured the tiger last night. I even pulled its ears,”

আমি সেই যে কাল রাতে বাঘটাকে ধরেছিলাম। আমি ওর কানটাকে ধরেছিলাম

Bholenath announced proudly. Everyone marveled at his bravery.

A few months after that evening, news came that a neighboring king has declared war. Bholenath and his king gathered at the royal court. The king told Bholenath, “You are the Commander-in-chief of my army. I entrust you with the duty of protecting my state.”

এই সন্ধ্যার কয়েকমাস পর খবর এল যে প্রতিবেশি রাজা যুদ্ধ ঘোষণা করেছে।ভোলানাথ এবং তার রাজা রাজসভায় সমবেত হলেন। রাজা ভোলানাথ বললেন,”তুমি আমার সেনাদলের প্রধান সেনাপতি। আমার রাজ্যের প্রতিরক্ষার দায়িত্ব তোমার তা বিশ্বাস রাখি।”

Bholenath came back home in utter despair. “I don’t even know how to ride a horse”, he told his wife helplessly, “How will I defend our borders against eight thousand enemy soldiers?”

In the morning, the king sent Bholenath a magnificent stallion. Bholenath got up glumly on the horse and his wife securely tied him to it with a rope. The horse did not like the feel of the tight ropes. It reared suddenly and galloped off wildly. Bholenath hung desperately to Its mane.

Realizing that the horse was headed straight for the enemy camp, Bholenath shouted in fear. The horse could not be stopped.

ঘোড়াটি সরাসরি শত্রুসেনার ঘাঁটিতে ঢুকে যাচ্ছে ভোলানাথ ভয়ে চিৎকার করে উঠলো। ঘোড়াটি থামল না।

Bholenath noticed a large tree with its branches hanging over the road. As the home galloped under the tree, Bholenath reached up to grasp the branches and pull himself free. But the branches broke away in his hands. The horse had entered the enemy camp.

ভোলানাথ রাস্তায় একটি বড়ো গাছ ও তার শাখাপ্রশাখা দেখতে পেলো। যখন ঘোড়াটি গাছের নিচ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিল, ভোলানাথ গাছের ডালপালাকে শক্ত করে ধরে নিজেকে মুক্ত করতে গেল। কিন্তু গাছের ডালপালা ভেঙে তার হাতে চলে এল ঘোড়াটি শত্রু শিবিরে ঢুকে গিয়েছিলো।

The enemy soldiers were astonished to see a wild-looking man tied to a fierce stallion, waving branches excitedly. “Help, help!”Bholenath was shouting. The enemy soldiers did not hear him. ভয়ানক তেজি ঘোড়ার পিঠে বাধা হাতে গাছের দল সহ আন্দোলিত অবস্থায় একটি বন্য লোককে দেখে শত্রুসেনারা অবাক হয়ে গেল। “বাঁচাও,বাঁচাও!” ভোলানাথ চিৎকার করছিলো। শত্রুসৈন্যরা তার কথা শুনতে পেল না। তারা খুব ভয় পেয়ে গেলো। “যে একলা আমাদের হারাতে আসছে সে নিশ্চয় বড়ো কোনো যোদ্ধা হবে। ” সৈন্যরা যুদ্ধ না করে তৎক্ষণাৎ ভয়ে পালিয়ে গেলো।

Soon the news of Bholenath’s great victory spread. Everyone was amazed that he had defended his state all by himself against eight thousand enemy soldiers. The king awarded him in a public ceremony. Bholenath became a legend. It all had started with a drip-drip!
