Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) is one of the most popular British children’s authors of all time. Her works include a series of novels in which children have their own adventures with minimal adult help. The most popular among these are The Famous five, based on four children and their dog, and The Secret Seven, a society of seven children who solve various mysteries. This text is an edited version of her short story The Adventurous Clown.

The Adventurous Clown Part – I

There was once a toy clown called Tuffy. He lived in a toy shop with many other toys. Tuffy longed to be a hero. He wanted to do something noble so that all the toys would cry out that he was a hero. He thought his little corner on the toy shelf was dull.

একসময় টাফি নামে এক খেলনা ক্লাউন ছিল। সে আরও অনেক খেলনার সাথে একটি খেলনার দোকানে থাকত।টফি নায়ক হতে চেয়েছিলেন। সে কিছু মহৎ কাজ করতে চেয়েছিলেন যাতে সমস্ত খেলনা চিৎকার করে যে সে একজন নায়ক। সে ভেবেছিল খেলনার তাকের ছোট্ট কোণটি নিস্তেজ।

“Why do you grumble so much?” asked Timothy, the puppy dog. “Be happy with us, Tuffy. Why do you want to go off and have adventures?”

“এত বকাবকি করছ কেন?” টিমোথিকে জিজ্ঞেস করল,কুকুরছানা (গল্পে কুকুরটির নাম টিমোথি) “আমাদের সাথে খুশি হও, টাফি। তুমি কেন যেতে চাও এবং অ্যাডভেঞ্চার করতে চাও?”

“Adventures are always exciting. I want to do something that would make all the toys take notice of me. It’s so dull up here on our shelf,” replied Tuffy.

“অ্যাডভেঞ্চার সবসময়ই উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ হয়। আমি এমন কিছু করতে চাই যাতে সব খেলনা আমার নজরে পড়ে। এখানে আমাদের শেলফের উপর এটি এতই নিস্তেজ,” উত্তর দিল টফি।

At night, the clown climbed down from his shelf to look for adventures. Now that night there was to be a grand race between two wooden horses and carts driven by wooden farmers. The race was just starting as Tuffy climbed down. One cart came racing by. The farmer riding it stood up and shouted!

রাতে, ক্লাউন তার শেলফ থেকে দুঃসাহসিক কাজের সন্ধানে নেমে আসে। এখন সেই রাতে কাঠের চাষীদের দ্বারা চালিত দুটি কাঠের ঘোড়া এবং গাড়ির মধ্যে একটি দুর্দান্ত প্রতিযোগিতা হওয়ার কথা ছিল। টাফি নীচে আরোহণ করার সাথে সাথে দৌড় শুরু হয়েছিল। একটা গাড়ি দৌড়ে আসলো। এতে চড়ে থাকা কৃষক উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে চিৎকার করে উঠলেন!

“Goodness! An adventure already! A runaway horse!” thought Tuffy. “Now is my chance to be a hero.”

“সৌভাগ্য! ইতিমধ্যে একটি দু: সাহসিক কাজ! একটি পলাতক ঘোড়া!” টাফি চিন্তা করল। “এখন আমার নায়ক হওয়ার সুযোগ।”

The horse and the cart came round again and Tuffy jumped at the reins. He held on to them and dragged the horse to one side. The cart turned over and the farmer fell down. Tuffy stood by, helping him up, feeling very proud that he had stopped the horse.

The Adventurous Clown Part – II

“What do you mean by spoiling my race like that?” he shouted. “Now the other horse and cart will win! You silly, little clown!”

“আমার প্রতিযোগীতা এভাবে নষ্ট করার মানে কি?” সে চিৎকার বলল. “এখন অন্য ঘোড়া এবং গাড়ি জিতবে! তুমি বোকা, ছোট ক্লাউন!”

Tuffy was upset. “You don’t understand I’m a hero!” He ran out and sat down in a toy farm wiping his tears. Suddenly Tuffy noticed a doll’s house in a corner of the shop. He saw smoke coming out of one of the windows. “Fire! Fire!” shouted Tuffy. “Another adventure! I’ll put it out at once.”

টাফির মন খারাপ হয়ে গেল। “তুমি বুঝ না আমি একজন নায়ক!” সে দৌড়ে বাইরে গিয়ে একটা খেলনা খামারে বসে চোখের জল মুছে দিল। হঠাৎ টাফির নজরে পড়ল দোকানের এক কোণে একটা পুতুলের ঘর। সে দেখল একটা জানালা দিয়ে ধোঁয়া বের হচ্ছে। “আগুন আগুন!” চিৎকার করে বলল টাফি. “আরেকটা দুঃসাহসিক কাজ! আমি একবারেই বের করে দেবো।”

He found a ladder and put it up against the wall of the doll’s house. Then he took a big bucket, filled it with water from the farm pond. Just then, someone caught him by the collar and roared, “And what do you think you’re doing playing a silly trick like that?”

সে একটি মই খুঁজে পেয়ে পুতুলের ঘরের দেয়ালে তুলে দিলেন। তারপর একটা বড় বালতি নিয়ে খামারের পুকুরের জলে ভরে দিল। ঠিক তখনই, কেউ একজন তাকে কলার ধরে গর্জে উঠল, “আর তুমি কি মনে কর তুমি এমন একটা ফালতু চালাকি খেলছ?”

Poor Tuffy was shaken like a rat. “Don’t do that!” he shouted. “I am a hero! I was putting out the fire.” Tuffy saw that he was speaking to a sailor doll who was making porridge. “Can’t I cook in peace without you coming and throwing water at me?”

“They won’t let me be a hero,” he sobbed.” Soon after, he heard a cry and looked around. There was a big bowl of water nearby. In it were swimming two fine goldfish. And there was a small doll too!

“ওরা আমাকে নায়ক হতে দেবে না,” সে কেঁদে উঠল৷ কিছুক্ষণ পরেই, সে কান্নার শব্দ শুনতে পেলেন এবং চারপাশে তাকাল৷ কাছেই একটি বড় বাটি জল ছিল৷ তাতে দুটি সূক্ষ্ম সোনার মাছ সাঁতার কাটছিল৷ এবং একটি ছোট পুতুল ছিল৷ খুব!

“She’s fallen in! I’ll rescue her! This is a real adventure at last!”

“সে ভিতরে পড়ে গেছে! আমি তাকে উদ্ধার করব! শেষ পর্যন্ত এটি একটি সত্যিকারের দুঃসাহসিক কাজ!”

The Adventurous Clown Part III

He caught hold of a little net and dipped it into the water. He brought the little doll out. But she slipped out and fell on to the table banging her head.

একটু জাল ধরে জলে ডুবিয়ে দিল। সে ছোট পুতুলটিকে বের করে আনল। কিন্তু সে ছিটকে পড়ল এবং টেবিলে মাথা ঠুকে গেলো।

She began to cry. Up came a policeman doll and said fiercely, “What are you doing, catching the doll and making her bump her head like that?”

সে কাঁদতে লাগল। একটা পুলিশ পুতুল এসে প্রচণ্ড গলায় বললো, “কি করছো, পুতুলটাকে ধরে ওর মাথাটা এমনভাবে ঠেকাচ্ছে?”

“I was saving her from drowning!” said Tuffy.

“আমি তাকে ডুবে যাওয়া থেকে বাঁচাচ্ছিলাম!” টাফি বলল

“I was having such a lovely swim!” sobbed the little doll. “I swim with the goldfish every night. But that clown caught me in a nasty net and spoilt my fun. He isn’t a hero at all!”

“আমি এত সুন্দর সাঁতার কাটছিলাম!” ছোট পুতুল কেঁদে ফেলল। “আমি প্রতি রাতে গোল্ডফিশের সাথে সাঁতার কাটতাম। কিন্তু সেই ক্লাউনটি আমাকে একটি বাজে জালে আটকিয়ে আমার মজা নষ্ট করে দেয়। সে মোটেও নায়ক নয়!”

The policeman locked Tuffy in a room in the police station. Suddenly he heard a noise outside the window of the room. “Tuffy, Tuffy!” barked a little voice. “It is I, Timothy. Here is the key to the door.”

পুলিশ টাফিকে থানার একটি কক্ষে তালাবদ্ধ করে রাখে। হঠাৎ ঘরের জানালার বাইরে একটা আওয়াজ শুনতে পেল। “টাফি, টাফি!” একটু ঘেউ ঘেউ “এটা আমি, টিমোথি। এখানে দরজার চাবি আছে।”

Tinkle! The key fell to the floor and the clown quickly unlocked the door. Timothy and he ran off together and climbed up to the shelf.

টিঙ্কেল ! চাবি মেঝেতে পড়ে গেল এবং ক্লাউন দ্রুত দরজা খুলে দিল। টিমোথি এবং তিনি একসাথে দৌড়ে শেলফে উঠে গেলেন।

“Thank you. You’re the hero!” he said. “I didn’t stop to think. But you saw I was in real trouble and you saved me.” The toy dog blushed.

“আপনাকে ধন্যবাদ। আপনি নায়ক!” সে বলেছিল. “আমি ভাবতে থামিনি। কিন্তু আপনি দেখেছেন আমি সত্যিকারের সমস্যায় পড়েছিলাম এবং আপনি আমাকে বাঁচিয়েছিলেন।” খেলনা কুকুরটি লজ্জা পেয়ে গেল।

“Oh! How peaceful it is up here. I’ll never want to leave this shelf again.”

And, until he was sold, he never did!
