There was once a king, and he had a Queen. They had several children. Alicia was the eldest, who looked after the other children. The King was, in his private profession, under the government. The Queen’s father had been a medical man out of town.
একদা একজন রাজা ছিলেন, তার একটি রাণী ছিল। তাদের বেশ কিছু সন্তান ছিল। অ্যালিসিয়া ছিলেন সবচেয়ে বড়, যিনি অন্য শিশুদের দেখাশোনা করতেন। রাজা তার ব্যক্তিগত পেশায় সরকারের অধীনে ছিলেন। রানীর বাবা শহরের বাইরে একজন ডাক্তার ছিলেন।
One day, the king was going to the office when he stopped at the fishmonger’s shop. He needed to buy a pound and a half of salmon which the Queen had requested him to send home.
একদিন রাজা অফিসে যাওয়ার সময় মাছের দোকানে এসে থামলেন। তাকে দেড় পাউন্ড স্যামন কেনার দরকার ছিল যা রানী তাকে বাড়িতে পাঠানোর অনুরোধ করেছিলেন।
He had not proceeded far after finishing his shopping, when the fishmonger’s errand-boy came running after him.
সে তার কেনাকাটা শেষ করে বেশিদূর এগোতে পারেনি, যখন মাছচাষীর কাজের ছেলেটি তার পিছু ছুটে এল।
He said, “Sir, you didn’t notice the old lady in our shop. “What old lady?” enquired the King. “I saw none.” Now, the King had not seen any old lady because she had been invisible to him, though visible to the fishmonger’s boy.

Let’s The Second Part Of The Magic Fish Bone Story
Just then, the old lady came trotting up! She was dressed in shot-silk of the richest quality.
ঠিক তখনই বৃদ্ধা ছুটে এলো! তিনি সবচেয়ে ধনী মানের শট-সিল্কের পোশাক পরেছিলেন।
“King Watkins the first, I believe?” “Watkins,” replied the King, “is my name.”

“Papa of the beautiful princess Alicia?” The old lady asked.

“Yes,” King Watkins replied.
“হ্যাঁ,” রাজা ওয়াটকিন্স উত্তর দিলেন।
“You are going to the office?” said the old lady.
“আপনি অফিসে যাচ্ছেন?” বুড়ি বলল।
It instantly flashed upon the king that she must be a Fairy, or how could she know that?
রাজার মনে তখনই ঝলমল করে উঠল যে সে নিশ্চয়ই পরী, না সে জানবে কিভাবে?
“You are right,” said the old lady, answering his thoughts, “I am the Good Fairy Grandmarina. Listen. When you return home to dinner, invite the princess Alicia to have some of the salmon you bought just now. When the beautiful princess finishes eating, you will find she will leave a fish-bone on her plate. Tell her to dry it, and to rub it, and to polish it till it shines like mother-of-pearl. Ask her to take care of it as a present from me.”
“তুমি ঠিকই বলেছ,” বুড়ি তার চিন্তার উত্তর দিয়ে বললো, “আমি একটি ভালো পরী গ্র্যান্ডমারিনা। শোনো। আপনি যখন রাত্রির খাবারে বাড়ি ফিরবেন, তখন রাজকুমারী অ্যালিসিয়াকে আমন্ত্রণ জানান আপনার কেনা কিছু স্যামন খেতে। যখন সুন্দরী রাজকুমারী খাওয়া শেষ করে, দেখবেন সে তার থালায় মাছের হাড় রেখে যাবে। তাকে শুকাতে বলুন, ঘষতে বলুন এবং পালিশ করতে বলুন যতক্ষণ না এটি মুক্তার মতো উজ্জ্বল হয়। তাকে এটির যত্ন নিতে বলুন আমার কাছ থেকে উপহার হিসাবে।”
“Is that all?” Asked the King.

“Tell the princess Alicia, with my love, that the fish-bone is a magic present which can be used only once. It will bring her, only once, what she wishes for-provided she wishes for it at the right time. That is the message. Take care of it.”

With those words, Grandmarina vanished. The King went on and on, till he came to his office. There he wrote and wrote and wrote, till it was time to go home again. Then he invited the princess Alicia, as the fairy had directed him, to take the salmon.

Days went by. One morning, the King came into Alicia’s room. He was sighing heavily, and seemed low spirited. He sat down miserably, leaning his head upon his hand, and his elbow upon the kitchen table.

Alicia asked, “What is the matter, Papa?” “I am extremely poor, my child,” the King replied.

“Have you no money at all, Papa?” Alicia enquired.”

“None, my child.”

“Is there no way left of getting any, Papa?”

“No way,” said the King.

“I have tried very hard, and I have tried all ways.”

When she heard those last words, the princess Alicia began to put her hand into the pocket where she kept the magic fish-bone.

“It only remains,” said Grandmarina in conclusion, “to make an end to the fish-bone.” So she took it from the hand of the princess Alicia, and it was instantly grabbed by the little snapping pug-dog next door!
